COMMISSIONS

Commissioning a painting can be scary and daunting, especially when it comes to the cost, but a simple inquiry and free consultation will take all of that away. I will give you all the options for sizing and pricing in order for you to get that painting you’ve always wanted without the stress and it costing a fortune.

  • Initial Enquiry

Please fill out the contact form or send an email with your initial ideas. I prefer to work from life but understand it’s not always possible whether it’s an infant, post-humourous piece, or a pet portrait. In saying that, not every great photo will make a great painting, and during the initial consultation process if you need me to work from photos I will let you know what will/won’t work for your commission.

  • Moving Ahead

Once you let me know what it is you’re after, whether it be a portrait of your dog, a seascape of your favourite destination, or a portrait, I will clearly let you know about costs and timings. Most oil paintings take me a minimum of 4 weeks to complete and a further 4 weeks to dry before I can send them. Commissions start at £350 for smaller works and go up depending on the subject matter, time, size, etc.

  • Starting the commission

Once the size, subject, time, price, etc are all agreed upon, a 50% deposit is required before beginning your painting. I will keep you updated throughout the process with photos and the remaining amount can be spread over 3 months if needed to make the piece as affordable as possible. Keeping you a part of the process not only takes the fear out of the finished piece not coming out how you had hoped but also allows your input throughout.

Commission Testimonials

“I commissioned a painting by Toby for my husband…I was so incredibly happy with the result! It is absolutely amazing - a perfect likeness and Toby captured his character and personality so well, which I found even more impressive since the portrait was based on a few pictures I emailed to him, and not real life. Toby also sent me progress photos throughout which was a great touch, I could see the art coming to life! He also offered the additional framing service which saved me the time and hassle of doing it myself, and the framing looked gorgeous. The whole process was so smooth and the painting is absolutely perfect, couldn’t be happier.”

“This was the first time I have ever commissioned a piece of art and was very nervous about doing so. I always imagined that it would be challenging and I would have to potentially pretend to like something that wasn't quite what I had in mind, even though I hadn't actually got a clue what I actually wanted, just not a copy of a photo. Toby made the whole process a sheer adventure and I loved every moment. He gave me accurate timescales and I was kept informed of progress and he checked that I was happy with what was being done. He really was brilliant. He even helped me to choose the frame to compliment the painting. If I had to be critical, I would struggle to find a thing to be negative about! I now have a magical piece of art that has captured the essence of a lovely little boy and I am lucky enough to enjoy the work every day. I definitely will be getting more of his work in the future as he is a real talent.”

“I commissioned Toby for a portrait as a gift to my wife and it is our favorite piece in the collection. It fits perfectly into our New York apartment. Toby made the whole process seamless and easy. He was upfront with sizing, prices, and timelines. The communication I received ensured the piece would meet my expectations and also technically work as a pleasing portrait. Several progress images were sent with excitement growing at every stage. It really felt like a collaboration. Not only did I receive a wonderfully executed portrait but also a great experience having worked with Toby.”

“On The day that I lost my beloved 15 year old pup Cookie, I decided to ask Toby to paint her portrait. The process was made very easy, Toby talked it through with me and gave me a price list to choose from and asked if I could supply a few pictures that I liked of Cookie. I was choosing between two sizes and Toby helped me by telling me how much detail would be possible on each of the sizes. I received regular updates of how the painting was going but from the very first outline sketch I could tell that I was going to love the painting. My biggest worry was that I would end up with a painting that didn’t look like the dog that I had known and loved for all these years, but the regular updates really made the whole experience stress free. I am blown away by the finished piece, I feel that Toby has not only captured her image perfectly he somehow captured her spirit too. She now lives pride of place in my home. Thank you Toby I really love her”
