ABOUT

Toby Gawler (b. 1987) is an Australian-born British artist living and working in Margate, UK. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Sydney in 2007, Toby moved to Europe and later trained in traditional oil painting methods at London Fine Art Studios, where he now also teaches.

Originally immersed in tattooing for over a decade, Toby returned to painting in recent years with a focus on working from life. His practice explores themes of selfhood, memory, narrative, and nostalgia, drawing inspiration from 20th-century Australian portraiture and classical masters such as Sargent, Sorolla, and Goya.

Toby's work invites viewers to connect emotionally through shared experiences and personal reflection. His debut solo exhibition, Dialogues, examines the dynamic relationship between artist, subject, and medium.

He has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club, and Chelsea Art Society. His accolades include the de Laszlo Young Artist Award at Green & Stone and an appearance on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year.
